What is Firmware & How is it Connected With Blu-Ray Players?

You may have heard of the word Firmware before and wondered just what the heck it was? And no, it is not referring to the latest fashions worn by office workers in a John Grisham
movie!

Firmware is very similar, in meaning and function, to software. While software is what enables computers to function or work; firmware is a computer program that’s embedded in a hardware device, such as a Blu-ray Player, to make it function or work properly.

As you can see by its name, firmware is rooted somewhere between hardware and software. Wikipedia defines it as: “In computing, firmware is a computer program that is
embedded in a hardware device, for example a microcontroller. It can also be provided on flash memory or as a binary image file that can be uploaded onto existing hardware by a user.”

Firmware is needed to make your Blu-ray player perform its many functions such as displaying movies and other features. A microprocessor usually runs its computer programming, just like you have in software, but it’s linked to a piece of hardware which could not run or function without it. This firmware lays out a set of rules which allows the hardware to function and provides a way for the software to interact with the hardware. That’s the main reason many people describe firmware as “software for hardware”.

Firmware can be permanently stored and may not even need a power source. It’s usually stored in read only memory chips or ROMs. The major advantage of firmware is that, even while it is permanent, it can be rewritten or updated. So improvements can be made by adding new features & functions or even fixing errors on a device. Take for example, when a Blu-ray Player is released it may not have certain features, but these can be added at a later time by updating the firmware.

However, firmware does have one major drawback, since upgrading the software only may not be enough to correct a problem or update a feature. Sometimes, you have to also upgrade the hardware as well, if your present hardware can’t support the upgrade.

How To Upgrade Your Firmware?

It is generally recommended, if you’re upgrading any firmware that you contact the manufacturer, who will have the latest firmware available. Now, there are two ways you can upgrade your firmware: directly download the upgrade into your hardware device or you can get the update on a CD or some other media. Either way, both methods are relatively painless and can be quickly and easily done. Your electronic device will instantly have its new feature or any errors will be fixed.

Many devices, such as some Blu-ray Players, which have an Internet connection provides the easiest method of updating your firmware. You simply log on to the manufacturer’s homepage and follow the instruction given for updating your firmware. Many times, this can be accomplished by downloading directly to the electronic device. Other times, you may be required to download to your hard-drive or some other device such as a memory card, then transfer the upgrade to your electronic device.

Just remember, firmware can be found in almost every electronic device. And since you can easily upgrade your firmware, this procedure greatly prolongs the use of the device, giving it much more durability. In other words, firmware lets you enjoy many of your electronic gadgets such as your Blu-ray Player, for a longer period of time before you have to buy a new machine. Since this can save you a lot of money over the long haul, that’s reason enough for you to fully understand firmware and how it works in your many electronic devices.

Blu Ray Disc Players and Which Are the Best

Nothing beats Blu-ray for being able to enjoy movies in the comfort of your own home, with a great quality picture. To really have fun, though, you have to make sure you have a great disc player. These high definition models remain unmatched for rich colors and picture quality. To enjoy the best in DVDs, then you should be aware of the best Blu Ray Disc Players.

The Sony Playstation 3 has gained a lot of recognition, due to its reasonable price tag and how versatile it is. They also recently teamed with Netflix to give you the ability to access member features and stream movies. Its slim design makes it very attractive to many buyers.

The BDP-S550 by Sony has also garnered a lot of notice, recently, for reliability and performance. They are known for giving great quality electronics at fair prices. With its own remote and Dolby Digital sound, it will not let you down. You can also use it to enjoy may types of media files, due to the built-in Ethernet port.

Another that is getting rave reviews from buyers is the Samsung BD-P3600. It also has a lower price tag than many other comparable models. You may not like that fact, however, that it cannot play 3D videos like some others can. It does provide excellent images and operates at barely a whisper.

The NB500Sl9 from Sylvania is just another product in their long line of great quality electronic items. Once again, due to a dropping price, you can get a superb player without spending too much money. This one has many incredible features and is capable of DVD upscaling. The one thing it lacks, though, is the ability to program it, so if this is important to you, then look elsewhere.

Many people love the Panasonic DMP-BD55 and its performance level. With this ability to play MPEG4 AVC and several other formats, you can use it for all your favorite media files. Current owners say it works wonderfully and gives great quality images. It is quite an investment, however, with a price tag of around $800.

The large, chunky and boxy design of the Sony BDP-CX960 makes it a bit of a disappointment from this electronics giant. It is not very attractive and it takes up a ton more room than its competitors do. If you are looking for something cheap, this one will also not suit, since it costs around $800.

Finding one that suits you needs and budget is not really a hard process. There are many superb Blu Ray Disc Players to pick from. You can easily compared models and find just what you want in many stores or online.

Blu-Ray DVD Players – The Next Big Thing in Home Entertainment

Do you want the ultimate in high definition entertainment experience? Do you want to bring your favorite movies to life with a crystal clear picture and beautiful surround sound? Well, now you can thanks to the technology provided by the Blu-ray DVD.

Blu-ray technology was developed in order to enable recording, rewriting and the playback of high definition video (HD). On top of this they can also store large amounts of data. With a Blu-ray disc you get more than five times the storage capacity of a traditional DVD as they can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual layer disc. The extra capacity as well as the combined use of advanced video and audio codecs means that with Blu-ray you are being presented with unprecedented HD experience. Also thanks to the extra storage space Blu-ray DVD discs offer an exciting array of advanced interactive features and bonus content. The discs are also highly resistant to dirt and scratches.

The reason that Blu-ray is the ultimate in high definition is down to the laser that is used to read the discs. Current optical disc technology, for example DVD, DVDR and DVD-RW as well as DVD-RAM are all read and written using a red laser; Blu-ray however used a blue-violet laser instead, which is where it gets its name from. So what is the difference? Well the main benefit of using the blue-violet laser is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser. The red laser is 650nm, whereas the blue-violet laser is 405nm. This makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision.

Blu-ray DVD players are available from many manufacturers, for example Sony, Samsung, Philips, Panasonic, Pioneer, LG and Sharp. On top of these quality brand Blu-ray DVD players the Playstation 3 includes a built in Blu-ray disc player. Also recently a number of laptop computer models have started to incorporate Blu-ray Disc players as well as producing add-on Blu-ray disc drives for desktop computers.

In order for you to enjoy all of the benefits that Blu-ray technology has to offer you will need a number of things such as a HDTV with HDMI cables to ensure the best picture quality. On top of this you will of course need a form of Blu-ray player and Blu-ray discs. It is however possible to play standard DVD’s on a Blu-ray player; if you are doing this however it should be noted that they will play in their normal quality and not be presented in Blu-ray standard. Also you are unable to play Blu-ray DVD discs on anything other than a Blu-ray player.

Blu-Ray is a glimpse of what future home entertainment is destined for and the industry expectation of Blu-Ray is that it will eventually replace DVD. Also since its introduction Blu-ray has continually advanced and there is no sign that this is going to change.

Whether you want to keep up-to-date with the latest industry trends or if you want the very best in home entertainment you need Blu-ray, so what are you waiting for? Get your Blu-ray technology set up straight away.

Before You Buy, Check a Blu-ray Quality Comparison

Do you know why it’s important to consider a Blu-ray quality comparison before you head out and shop for your Blu-ray player? It’s easy to think that all Blu-ray players are alike but in reality this just isn’t true. While the technology may be the same and they all work in the same way, there are some differences between them that you might want to consider. And some machines come with other options and features that might make them a better choice for you.

For instance, the PlayStation 3 is a Blu-ray player as well as having a built-in Wii. You can also browse the internet through this device. That means that if you want to play Wii games or PlayStation games or watch a movie in high def, this is the machine for you! With all these features standard it can become your true home theater component, whatever you’re planning on using it for. As a matter of fact, some have said their only complaint is that they can’t get the family away from it.

Of course there are other players on the market and you need to make your own decision about what works best for you. If you just watch the occasional movie but want it in high def, then a basic model may be for you. However you want to be sure that you’re still getting your money’s worth! The last thing you want to do is buy some knockoff or poor quality machine and wind up having to replace it after a few months. So do your research and keep in mind your own particular needs, and your Blu-ray quality comparison will save you money in the long run.

How to Choose a Blu-Ray Player

With the cost of Blu-ray players down, many people are looking to upgrade from DVDs. If you have never used a Blu-ray player, you might not know what to look for. Price, features, brand, and ease of use all factor into the buying decision. Here are some things to consider when looking for a new system.

Many people start with the price. Deciding how much you are willing to pay for BD player will enable you to narrow your search to a handful of models. But before you do this, you need to know the average cost. Depending on the features, the brand, how new the model is, and on-going sales, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100-$500 for one. As with most things in life, the highest price doesn’t necessarily mean the best model, but the cheaper ones tend to have less features than the more expensive ones.

One you have narrowed it down by price, you will want to choose which features are most important to you. Many people are simply looking for great sound and vivid video. For these people, a mid-line model is often the best option. Other people will want something that can do more than play blu-ray discs. These people will have to be willing to spend extra. One popular feature is the ability to stream Netflix movies. In order to utilize this feature, you need a Netflix subscription and a high speed internet connection. If you don’t have these, there would be no point in paying extra for this.

Another thing to consider is ease of use. Most players are easy to set up and install, but others will require some technical knowledge or experience to get the settings right. Read some reviews about how quick the set up is if this is a concern for you. If you are giving it as a gift to someone, assume that they have little knowledge unless you know otherwise. This will allow them to enjoy the present without frustration.

Brand isn’t important to everyone, but some people are loyal to their favorite companies. The most popular brands are Sony, Panasonic, LG, and Samsung. They will usually have multiple models for sale. There may be a low-cost version, a middle-cost version, and a high-end model. The differences between these tend to be based on features rather than picture quality or durability.

One other thing to think about is the available selection. Going to the local store may make returns easier, but the selection will be limited and the price may be higher. If you are buying online, you are unlimited in the models that you can choose, but it can be more difficult to return the product if you are unhappy with it. Be sure to check the store’s return policy before you purchase, whether you are shopping offline or online.

Whether you are buying a Blu-ray disc player for your own home or as a present, you want to make sure that you are getting the right one for your needs. Doing research before hand can help save you from buyer’s remorse.

Best 3D Movies on DVD to Play on Your Blu Ray 3D DVD Player

The coming 3D revolution will have to rely heavily on other factors than just 3D capable TV, such as transcoding the best 3D movies on DVD and of cause a Blu Ray 3D DVD player to play them on, if it is to maintain enough momentum to see it through the initial launch stages.

Though all the signs are good and the market research points to consumers having the appetite for 3D in the home, it is going to take more than a big flashy launch and some PR men telling us that this is what we need to turn this technology mainstream. What people want is content, not particularly any old animated movie getting the 3D works on it but the biggest movies, action movies, drama and period productions giving consumers the best 3D movies on DVD.

All the noise has been coming from the consumer electronics companies, talk of how great their products are, what they can deliver and when they will hit the stores but for me the big producers need to get a bit more vocal and start telling us what we are going to be able to watch on our 72 inch monster 3D enabled TV. Disney have promised a 3D version of the classic A Christmas Carol and Samsung and Dreamworks have struck a deal to replicate some content in 3D with Technicolor.

A big factor has to be if these companies can get even close to the 3D cinema experience movie goers are getting at present from the likes of Bolt an animated movie shot in 3D, Up and Avatar. A good pointer and perhaps a sign of things to come are those movies in the pipeline. Toy Story 3 and Shrek goes Forth are penciled in to be shot in three dimension and older films getting the 3D magic are Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and also Chicken Little.

These films will not be on their own as I expect more and more directors would love to join James Cameron and jump aboard as and when Hollywood commits fully to the technology. When it does you can be sure the full cinema experience will be available at home.

Other new releases that are being shot in 3D and expected for a 2010 release are Beauty and the Beast, Oobermind, Despicable Me, Tron 2 and Hubble 3D, all of which will eventually make it onto DVD. But will these make you run out and buy the latest Blu Ray DVD player after all they will be the best 3D movies on DVD available.

Four Features Every Good Blu-Ray DVD Player Should Have

With the Blu-ray format becoming more and more popular, there are now many different versions of Blu-ray DVD Players in the marketplace, all having their own set of features and functions. Combine this with the fact Blu-ray is a relatively new technology, it can get a little confusing for us consumers to figure out exactly what to look for when buying a new Blu-ray player. To help you decide, here are four features every good Blu-ray DVD Player should have:

BD LIVE

All Blu-ray Players are divided into Profiles and each Profile offers certain functions and features. Older profiles are 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and BD-Live is the latest and newest Profile. It is the best profile and contains all the functions and features of 1.0 and 1.1, as well as a few new ones. Most Blu-ray Players manufactured today are Profile 2.0 or BD Live, but not all of them. BD-Live allows you to access a wide variety of bonus material found on the web, such as online movie related games, latest trailers and other content. It allows your movie experience to be interactive since you can go into chat rooms and discuss movies online.

Ethernet/Wireless

Blu-ray DVD Players are not just about the Blu-ray disc anymore, it offers so much more. Being able to connect your Blu-ray DVD Player to the Internet or your home computer is no longer a convenient perk but a definite must. In the beginning the Ethernet port was mainly used as a nice and fast way of upgrading your Blu-ray Player’s firmware. Although this is still the case, having your Blu-ray Player connected, now offers so much more. There are many services out there that have online streaming of movies and TV shows in High Definition. Services like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon-on-Demand offer a wide variety of movies and TV shows in HD. Therefore, you no longer have to pay for specialty HD cable channels in order to watch your favorite TV shows or movies; you can Stream them online for free.

The Blu-ray DVD Player having a wireless connection is big plus since you don’t have to deal with all those annoying cables. Blu-ray Players with wireless Ethernet, once you turn the power on, will automatically pick up your wireless home network and connect you to it. Streaming movies and pictures from your home computer is also something you can do via some Blu-ray Players.

Fast Load Times

Blu-ray DVD Players have a reputation of very slow disc loading times. In the past, and to some extent still today, this has been a main criticism of Blu-ray DVD Players. It may seem like an insignificant feature, but most people when they insert a disc want instant playback and waiting around for a few minutes before you can access your disc can get rather annoying. Adding to the annoyance is you get different loading times with each movie Blu-ray disc. The good news is that Blu-ray Players are improving their load times. Players like Sony’s PlayStation 3, OPPO’s BDP-83, and Samsung’s BD-P3600 have very fast loading times, and most Blu-ray movies have the exact same loading time. Remember, updating the Blu-ray Players firmware can increase loading times, as manufactures are always trying to improve playback.

Audio/Video

Lastly, but certainly not least, it should come as no surprise that a Blu-ray DVD Player should have great audio and video. Having a clear, sharp, crisp image/sound is a very important feature and Blu-ray Players can deliver this if they have Full HD 1080p video output. Every Blu-ray Player will have Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM audio formats. However, if you want the best, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio; these are the formats you should look for in a Blu-ray DVD Player. These will bring you the best possible sound and most blu-ray movies will be encoded with these audio formats.

Of course, there are other great features and functions that a Blu-ray Player might have, but these four features are the core basics to every good Blu-ray DVD Player. Having all four of these features will make for a solid, dependable Blu-ray DVD Player, fully allowing you to get the best enjoyment out of your movie viewing experience and even a little bit more.

The makers of Blu-ray didn’t stop there, they also built in more special features into each disc to provide more user interaction with each movie.
