What Are Blu-Ray Players? – A Guide to Understanding

Blu-ray players will soon become a thing of the future with many people already becoming vastly interested in them and casting aside their DVD players. Blu-ray is basically a high definition alternative to DVD’s so you can watch films in crystal clear format and a higher resolution.

The first blu-ray disc titles were released back in June 2006 and are still gradually making their way into the limelight and the international market as only a selected amount of people understand what they are, the benefits of them, and of course the money to actually purchase one of these devices.
The disc itself is the same size and shape as a DVD disc, the only difference is blu-ray uses a blue laser to read and write, and this laser has a shorter wavelength from its beam than that of a DVD so the ability to store more on the disc is possible, DVD’s use a red laser to read and write with a longer beam length so storage potentials are limited.

At the moment the rewritable discs come in at anything from a dual layer disc that holds 25GB per layer, so 50GB altogether, and right through to Riteks latest development where they have successfully developed a 10 layer disc that reaches the boundaries of 250GB.

A lot of films that are currently being released are also being developed in the Blue-ray form which means you can watch these on a blu-ray player in HD, and surprisingly the prices of a blu-ray disc are very reasonable. For example, if you wanted to buy Batman: The Dark Knight you can be looking as cheap as £14.99 for the blu-ray format. That said, for a decent blu-ray player you can expect to pay anything from £150 – £300.

Pioneer BDP-320 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player Reviews

I have a Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-Ray Player connected to a Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD HDTV. Set-up was very fast with most of the parameters is automatic between the two Pioneer. The only manual I had to do with the BDP-320 has been set at the exit of Source Direct.

The Pioneer BDP-320 for de-interlacing was lower than the Kuro. Hot Fuzz, which I used as a test DVD and 320 products over the edges white Metropolitan Police logo on the jacket is black. Change Source Direct dispelled any artifacts and makes the best DVD picture on my Kuro yet. Some other materials on DVD (LOTR), I found the best image ever since the BDP-320 is upconverting and PDP-5020FD-east of the intersection. However, the BDP-320 offers the flexibility to get the best possible image of your installation.

The sound quality of the BD using the optical digital output is greatly improved over the DVD. There is a greater definition bass frequency, and it seems that sound investment is more clearly defined. These observations are subjective, but I was surprised to see the difference. This makes me more likely to upgrade my receiver to a newer model that is able to handle the loss of most audio formats HDMI.

Although the BDP-320 is my first BDP, from what I can say that is not a great improvement over the previous model BDP-51FD Pioneers. The owners are asking twice the load, the picture quality, sound quality DVDs and change the response level are almost identical. The improvement in the BDP-320 is a small frame, increasing the size of ROM (for engineers from Pioneer firmware so good for you), out-of-the-box for DTS HD MA, much compatibility and built in BD BD-Live is included with 1 GB of memory and LAN. I hope that the BDP-320’s biggest ROM allows future firmware updates for its past to push the performance of the BDP-51FD.

Both with The Dark Night with BD-Live

Power off to open the tray – 27s

Press the drawer next to the WB logo – 42s

Press plateau near the beginning of the film – 1m.53s

I am very happy with my purchase, but was surprised by the fact that the loading times not improved over the Pioneer BDP-51. (Okay, I was very pleased with the BDP-320, but the DVD layer change is not acceptable. The BDP-320 has been returned and Oppo BDP-83 is its replacement.)

The player of the quality of construction is solid and strong. The picture quality is the best I’ve seen on my PDP-5020. Any person who requires a lot of comic books has not improved on the DVD is not right. While the DVD looks nice, BD is significantly improved in both depth of color, black level, and simply having a higher pixel.

The BDP-320 long-PQ / SQ of DBP-51FD is one of the best players on the market. I suggest reading the comments of the BDP-51FD and taking into account the improvement of the BDP-320.

Sony HTSS360 Blu-ray Disc Player Home Theater System Review

While home theater systems have been around for quite some time, Blu-ray disc capable home theater systems few and far in between. For the most part, this means that anyone wanting to watch full HD video on their home theater system have to get a separate Blu-ray disc player. For the user who is starting from scratch, its nice to have the option of getting a system than can play everything without having to search for the Blu-ray player that jives with the home theater system of your choice. For this reason, Sony have come up with the Sony HTSS360 Blu-ray Disc Player Home Theater System that consists of an AV receiver with three HDMI inputs and a 5.1 speaker system.

The Sony HTSS360 has four identical speakers (the front and surround speakers), as well as a tiny center channel and a sub-woofer. The front/surround speakers are encased in plastic with each speaker housing a single 2.6-inch cone driver. The center channel is even more compact than the speakers while the sub-woofer is passive in that it is un-powered with no built-in amp. This means that the system has a very small footprint in comparison to other home theater systems and should fit any room quite well.

Even the AV receiver has been made compact, complete with a stylish silver finish that would blend in well with most decors. The front panel has almost no controls except for the power button, input selection button and the huge volume knob on the right. The Sony HTSS360’s remote is the standard Sony remote but thankfully it comes with bass and treble controls as well.

While the Sony HTSS360 comes with an automatic speaker calibration feature, you can also do your own manual tweaking. The set comes with an auto-setup microphone, which plugs into the back of the unit. The set also has a DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) system that adjusts the volume level of each speaker and the sub-woofer, measuring the distance between each speaker and the user’s listening position.

On top of the three HDMI inputs, the Sony HTSS360 is equipped with 3 analog audio inputs and 3 digital audio inputs; 2 optical and 1 coaxial. It also has Sony’s Digital Media Port and comes equipped with Dolby and DTS sound decoding modes, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and DTS. While there is no built-in support for satellite radio or HD radio, the Sony HTSS360 does offer both AM and FM tuners.

The Best Blu-Ray Players As of August 2009

LG BD390 Blu-ray Player: Although it was Sony that has brought us the Blu-ray disc format, at the time of writing it is LG that manufactures the best Blu-ray player in the market. The great Blu-ray and DVD movie playback is just the beginning of the long list on what is great about this player. Whether it is in terms of loading speed and video quality, the BD390 came up on top of its class. Besides having a great video playback, it also comes with many great features. For starters it has built-in wi-fi capabilities so that you would not have to connect a cable to view online content. Once connected to the internet, you can view online content from YouTube, Netflix and CinemaNow. This player comes with on-board decoding for DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD audio signals. It also has 7.1 analog outputs.

Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Player: The Panasonic DMP-BD60 is another bag of goodies. It has excellent movie playback (especially for Blu-ray discs) and comes with an array of extra features. This model can also stream online content, but it does not come with wi-fi connectivity. You can also access Amazon on Demand movies on this player. The loading time of Blu-ray movies isn’t as fast as would like it to be. Overall, the Panasonic DMP-BD60 is a great BR player, especially for its price range.

Sony BDP S360 Blu-ray Player: The Sony BDP S360 is the best no-frills Blu-ray player in the market. It does not have many of the extra features of the two models above but serves its main purpose (playing Blu-ray movies) really well. The loading time was pretty fast and the video quality was generally very good. It is the perfect buy for anyone who is looking for a simple and straightforward BR player.

Blu Ray Players – 4 Questions You May Be Asking

These common Blu Ray questions pop up every day. Are you ready to see if you know the answers?

1-Explain high definition blu ray players

What is / are blu ray DVD players? Good question. Blu ray technology according to Wikipedia , is the name given to the Blu-ray Disc because of the blue laser used to read and write on these types of discs. Since the wavelength of the blurays light beam is much ’s shorter , a lot more data can be installed on a Blu-ray Disc compared to a typical DVD disc which is burned using a red beam light. How much more info can a Blu-ray Disc store? Believe it or not, it can store approximately six times the amount of a two-layer DVD, and even as much as ten and a half times that of a standard DVD. Now you can see why they can put all of the information needed to give you a better , clearer picture on a single disc.

A blu ray player then is simply the piece of equipment that plays blu-ray discs just like a dvd player plays dvd’s.

2- Can you play blu ray disks on regular dvd players

So do blu ray dvds work on regular players? Perhaps you have been wondering about that. Unfortunately the Blu-Ray Discs will not play in your run of the mill DVD player. Why is that? Well remeber what we learned in question number 1? The bluray disc uses a Blue/violet beam of light to read the data that a DVD players red laser will not be a able to read.

So it looks like you will have to upgrade your DVD player to a blu ray if you plan on buying and watching your 1080P high def movies the way they were meant to be seen.

And by the way, that goes for HD-DVD technology as well. HD-DVD players use another kind of blue laser that can not read Blu-Ray Discs, just as Blu-Ray players can not read HD-DVD’s

3- Can you play regular DVD’s in a Blu-ray player?

Now this is some good news if you are outfitting a new home theater room. No you do not have to buy a DVD player as well. Yes, Blu-Ray players can play standard DVDs. And don’t worry…they don’t change the DVD formatting or alter the disk in any way. In fact they will look even better then they do when played on your old DVD player. Now don’t get me wrong, a standard DVD played in a blu-ray player will not have the high definition of a Blu-Ray disc, but they certainly be upconverted to a better quality than they used to.

Here is a nice surprise they might even play your CD’s as well! That means you won’t need to invest in a CD player either.

4-What are multi region blu ray players?

Were you wondering about what multiregions blu ray players are? Multi-region players play all 3 regions of bluray discs that are available through out the world.

Region 1 is made up of North America, Central America, South America, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia.

Region 2 is made up of Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

Region 3 is made up of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central, and South Asia.

What this means is that if you have a Region “1″ bluray player, you will not be able to play a region “2″ or a region “3″ disc and so on.

A multi-region player will be able to play discs from all 3 regions. Here is the thing though, don’t expect to pay $199 for one of these. Prices range from$700- $1,700 bucks for each one.

Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player

The Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player is the new replacement model for last year’s very popular S350. This new model ships with a central unit, a remote, a composite cable, AC adapter, batteries and a series of manuals (it does not come with a HDMI cable).

One of the main highlights of this new model is not its video quality (the Blu-ray movie playback was very impressive but seems similar to the older S350), but the new audio features. The new S360 can decode DTS HD and Dolby HD audio so you don’t need to get a separate receiver unit. It also comes with BD Live and Bonus View features.

The Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player currently has the quickest startup time in the market. When you load the disk into the tray, you can start viewing the Blu-ray movie in just 6 seconds. It also uses Sony’s Precision Cinema HD technology that up-scale the quality of DVD movies to full HD 1080p quality (as much as it possibly can). Then there is the Precision Drive technology that helps you play bent or scratched discs.

This new model has a clean and glossy front panel. It is designed to blend with any other Sony HDTVs or Sony home theater systems. The BDP-S360 is also more energy efficient. It uses 15% less power while playing movies and 20% less energy while it on standby mode. This model works best with other Sony products. If you plug it in with a Sony HDTV, the Sony Bravia Sync feature will automatically turn the HDTV on when you hit the play button on the player, so you will only need to use one remote control when you watch a Blu-ray or DVD movie. The setup of the BDP-S360 didn’t take long and the setup menu interface was very easy to use.
