To meet the demands of the consumer’s expectations of high quality Sony has introduced the big brother to the BDP-S300 and 350 series, the Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray Disc Player.
Bringing the latest cutting edge technology into it’s mid position product range including 1080p picture quality with DVD upscaling allowing an almost High Definition Television viewing experience from old style DVD’s.
With Sony incorporating the full 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD surround sound giving an exceptional cinematic sound experience along with 24p True Cinema. With all these features, the Sony Blu Ray Player BDP-S360 has once again raised the bar.
Sony has continued with their skill of improving usability and style while maintaining it’s simplicity. When any new technology is going through the latter part of the evolution process, there is always the temptation to over complicate the system. Sony’s expertise however means that they stick to their core principles making the Sony BDP-S360 surprisingly simple to operate.
This basic philosophy is evident from the moment you plug the BDP-S360 into your TV. Turn it on and you can be fully up and running in as little as 6 second. Incorporate this with the Sony BRAVIA High Definition Television and you can be up and running in that time completely wirelessly. Imagine that, no more messing around with those messy wires behind your TV. I’m sure many of you reading this are snorting that this technology already exists, and it does, but here’s the one question I’d throw right back “how easy was it to set up”? The Sony system truly has broken new ground.
The Sony BDP-S360 also offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of BD-Live™ taking home entertainment to another level. The BD-Live™ feature allows you to download Movie specific games, trailers and even additional movie scenes.
With all these features, I’m sure you’ll agree that the Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray Player is undoubtedly a “trend setter” yet again. Maintaining a stylish and sleek look, sitting perfectly in the middle market price range, selling from new for just under $300 and incorporating most of the latest technology.

With Panasonic’s release of the world’s first Blu-Ray compatible portable DVD player, it’s time for you to consider taking your portable DVD viewing to the high definition level.
At this time Blu-Ray has yet to make a significant mark on the world of portable DVD players and there are several key reasons for this.
1. Image Quality: Matters far less on a small screen. Blu-Ray is meant to enhance the movie watching experience by providing High Definition Video. High definition vieo offers resolutions ranging from 1280×720 pixels or 1920×1080 pixels meaning that the best way to enjoy these high resolutions is on a big screen. In fact the larger the screen the better. With their 7” to 10” screens portable DVD players will not show any great improvement in video quality.
2. Price: The average portable DVD player ranges in price from just over 100 dollars US to 200 dollars. On the other hand a portable Blu-Ray player currently costs around 500 dollars US or more.
3. Power: High definition video requires far more power than conventional portable DVD players do, and as it currently stands, Lithium-Ion batteries are barely able to provide three hours of non-stop viewing
4. Disk Price: Blu-Ray discs cost a considerable amount more than standard definition DVD.
With all these factors working against portable Blu-Ray players, it seems unlikely that they will able to put a significant dent into the traditional portable DVD market. Unfortunately for Blu-Ray these aren’t the only factors holding it back as the emergence of other new technologies also throw a considerable road block in front of the portable Blu-Ray and put new demands on the players. Theses new technologies include:
1. Digital TV: With the shift from analog to digital TV, consumers are more likely to want a portable player that they can hook up to a digital input.
2. Gaming Consoles: Will it be possible to hook up a video game console such as an Xbox 360 or a PS3 to the player.
3. Card Ports: Many consumers want the ability to take the SD cards straight from their cameras and insert them into their portable player so that they are able to share home videos and pictures on a larger screen.
With the advent of these new technologies, consumers are going to be looking for more out of their portable media than just the ability to view movies on the go. Add that together with the fact that as far as portable movie viewing goes, definition and picture quality is not as high on the list of what is valued by the consumer and at the elevated cost it certainly would seem that Blu-Ray has come to late to the portable DVD player market.

The blue laser has the ability to read to read data from the pits that have size of 0.15 µm (microns). One micron is equivalent to 10-6 meters. The pits on the DVD disk are twice as bigger than that of the pits on Blu-ray media disc. Track pitch in the DVD disc is 0.74 microns which has been reduced to 0.32 microns in the Blu-ray media disk. The shorter track pitch, smaller laser beam and smaller pits, all these features assist the Blu-ray disk to record data of 25-GB on a single layer. Now the users have more luxury as the recording capacity of Blu-ray media disk is 5 times more than DVD disk.
The thickness of DVD and Blu-ray disk is same. The thickness of both disks is 1.2 millimeters. The data recording procedure is different for both disk types. DVD disc has 2 polycarbonate layers and the thickness of each layer is 0.6 mm. The information which is to be recorded on DVD disk is sandwiched between these 2 layers.
A layer on top of the recorded information can lead to birefringence. In birefringence, the laser light is refracted into 2 separate beams by the substrate layer. Data cannot be read from the DVD disk if the laser light splits too wide. Disk tilt is another problem that is caused if the surface of DVD disc is not totally flat or it is not precisely perpendicular to the laser the light. The laser beam distorts due to disk tilt. Very involved manufacturing procedure is required in DVD disk to avoid these problematic issues.
These problems have been solved in the Blu-ray disk format. In Blu-ray disk format, the data is recorded on top of polycarbonate layer whose thickness is 1.1 mm. This technique of Blu-ray overcomes birefringence. So as a result the readability problems are avoided in the Blu-ray disk format. In Blu-ray disc format, the objective lens and the recording layer are very closer to each other.
This closeness to the objective lens virtually eliminates the disk tilt problem which enhances the performance. The outer side of Blu-ray media disk is protected by a hard coating because the recorded information is very closer to the Blu-Ray disk’s surface. This hard coating feature makes the Blu-ray media unique, robust, efficient and more advantageous. The hard coating layer protects the Blu-ray disk surface from fingerprints and scratches. Therefore, the Blu-ray media disc is able to store information for longer time periods. Blu-ray media format is more reliable and robust.

Green packaging: What you can expect
Environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases are produced from recycled materials such as paper, foam, paperboard and old plastics. As such, many eco-friendly packaging are categorized as ‘no-plastic’, ‘low-plastic’, ‘bio-degradable or with bio-degradable content’ or ‘recycled’. Depending on the manufacturer, the packaging used on certain batches of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs may or may not include certain types of recycled materials.
Advantages of environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases
Environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases are beneficial in many ways. A few of their benefits include:
Biodegradable and recyclable
Environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases are manufactured with the conscious effort of ensuring that materials used can and will break down when disposed of. Materials are also recyclable, which means that they can be re-used again and again, without requiring any additional raw materials.
Manufacturing processes involved in producing recyclable materials are also eco-friendly, in that they produce only 85% (at the minimum) less carbon dioxide than traditional materials.
Flexibility in design
Environmentally friendly cases used for DVDs and Blu-Ray discs can come in a wide variety of designs and color. Although most cases are sold pre-formed (2-panel, 4-panel, with closed pockets, etc.), buyers can almost always order a customized design to suit their needs and preferences.
More lightweight than traditional materials
Environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases tend to be lightweight, making them easier to pack, store and ship. Most packaging made from recycled materials are 40 – 50% lighter than traditional materials such as plastic. With lighter packaging, producers and retailers save on costs related to shipping and transport.
Green printing
Producers of environmentally friendly DVD and Blu-Ray cases frequently use inks made from plants and vegetables. This type of organic ink makes it possible to produce texts and design while using waterless printing technology.
Cost
Technology used to produce environmentally friendly packaging make it possible for retailers to take advantage of their cost efficiency. They have been proven to be competitive to pricing associated with the more traditional petroleum-based cases.
