Blu-Ray set to take the world by storm!
The advantage with the Blu-ray technology is that the laser beam can be focused much more tightly at the surface of the disc. Tight focus means that a smaller spot will be produced on the surface on the disc, and when the spots become smaller there will naturally be room for more information on each disc. The minimum spot size of any laser depends on a naturally accruing phenomenon called diffraction. The narrow beam of light sent out from a laser will always diverge into a wider beam eventually, due to the natural diffraction of waves. Diffraction will also occur the waves meet an obstruction. By reducing the wavelength of a laser, we can affect the diffraction.
In Blu-ray technology, the diffractions is also affected by the fact that the lens used to focus the light has a higher numerical aperture than the lenses found in ordinary DVDs – 0.85 instead of 0.6. Blu-ray technology based appliances are also equipped with a dual-lens system of supreme quality, and the cover layer has been made thinner in order to prevent unwanted optical effects. All this makes it possible for a Blu-ray laser to focus on much smaller spots. The optical improvements are accompanied with a new method for encoding data which makes it possible to store even more data on the Blu-ray disc.
The standard for Blu-ray technology has been developed as a joint venture between several major manufacturers of PCs and consumer electronics, including Sony and Philips. The group is called the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The first Blu-ray recorder was launched in Japan in 2003, by Sony. Today, Samsung, JVC, Matsushita (Panasonic) and LG Electronics are all examples of companies using Blu-ray technology in their products. Hewlett Packard has announced that they will release desktop PCs equipped with Blu-ray technology in late 2005.
The main competitor for the Blu-ray technology is the HD DVD format which is also capable of storing more information than a normal DVD. The Blu-ray technology does however allow for more information per layer than the HD DVD format – 25 GB compared to 15 GB. The Blu-ray technology will on the other hand most likely be more expensive to support, at least initially, which can make the HD DVD a tempting alternative. In a Blu-ray disc, the data is stored extremely close to the surface. This made the first Blu-ray discs extremely vulnerable to scratching and many users preferred the tougher HD DVD discs. Since 2004, all Blu-ray discs are coated with a clear polymer called “Durabis” which makes them much more durable. According to the developers of Durabis, the TDK Corporation, a coated Blu-ray disc will work even after being attacked with a screwdriver.

“In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
“Warner Bros.’ move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want,” said Meyer. “The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers.”
Variety is reporting that Warner sister company New Line has announced that it too plans to shift to Blu-ray exclusivity. For the moment both Warner Bros. subsidiaries, HBO and New Line, remain format-agnostic, though it’s widely expected that they will follow Warner Home Entertainment’s exclusive use of the Blu-ray format. However, the studio’s declaration that it would drop HD DVD support does not extend to titles released by New Line, HBO or the BBC, according to Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara.
Blu-ray is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video. The name “Blu-ray” is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. The Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group of leading companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production, developed the format.
Warner Bros.’ decision is a huge development in the Blu-ray disc versus HD DVD format war currently raging on because Warner Bros. was always considered the big fish to be landed by one side or the other. Consumers were lobbied hard by both sides during Christmas as dirt-cheap Toshiba HD DVD players were advertised heavily by Wal-Mart for $98.97 while the higher priced Blu-ray players were also discounted by electronics retailers (though not nearly as much).
The change will take effect from May 2008. Executives at Warner Bros. explained that the choice to solely support one high-definition format over another was made to avoid uncertainty on the market of HD movies and allow Warner’s partners among retailers to stock more titles by Warner than previously. Warner Bros.’ move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a tactical decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want.
Tsujihara says the studio took no pay-offs to exclusively back Blu-ray. He emphatically denied reports that the studio had received anywhere from $250 to $500 million in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support in a post-announcement conference call. Warner’s only incentive to drop its HD DVD format, according to the exec, was to ensure growth of the “category” and the long-term health of the industry.

The Blu-ray disc can work on wide range of formats. This includes Rom, R and RW. The BD-Rom is a read only format that allows the opening of games and movie files. The BD-R is a format that allows HD video recording and data storage in a PC. The BD-RE is a writable format for PC data storage and HD video recording. Thus these formats effectively support the playing of any type of videos stored on the discs. Essentially the video codecs supported by Blu-ray are on formats such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC. The SMPTE VC 1 is another standard format based on Microsoft Windows Media Video (WMV) technology.
There are some compelling features of Blu ray recorders. They allow the users to have random access to a track that is being played. The user can jump to any position on the track. There is also the option whereby the user can quickly browse and watch recorded programs. One can also change the order in which recorded programs are stored on the device. One of the key features of this disc is that it can simultaneously be used to record as well as play videos. While doing this, the disc automatically finds an empty space so as to avoid recording over already stored programs.
One can record videos and simultaneously play movies on these discs. The disc can also be used to run online Blu-ray movies too where one gets the opportunity to store her or his favourite movies online while also simultaneously watching it on the internet. Nowadays, these discs are being used by high definition televisions (HDTV) for their improved picture quality. They also have the capability to record surround sound. All these parameters make these discs highly compatible.

This new technology has turned out to be popular not just with professionals who Business organizations need to give presentations during the conferences, seminar and board meetings, but also with many people who like to play games, listen to music or watch videos.
As you are going to give all the projects to your Blu-ray publisher, make sure that his system is reliable to do the entire task with good quality standards. An efficient system can produce multiple discs at one time. Another aspect of choosing the Blu-ray publisher is that the computer system should have the software that can make it communicate with the work files. It should be well versed to handle all types of files such as audio files, video files, text based and html files. However, Blu-ray is compatible to different multimedia gadgets with a full range of additional features.

Media Giant Warner Home Video is leading the charge to make prices fall by announcing an aggressive and nearly predatory price slashing strategy. But will film sales be strong enough to fuel a price war? Will shop owners have enough traffic to pass the value on to high definition film fans?
Analysts say yes. Even with some major economies around the globe in a slump, video sales are expected to remain stable. Looking at data for the last major U.S. recession some two decades ago video sales and rentals stayed strong while other sectors slumped. Some analysts suggest that the re-usable quality of a recorded film like a DVD gives hard times buyers more bang for their buck than the price of a theater ticket.
Consumers have another edge when looking for the best price on Blu-ray DVDs’, the new website Blu-ray sale. Catering to the European market and located at www.Blu-Raysale.eu. This new entry to the market is welcomed by collectors wishing to expand their Bluray disc film collection with today’s shrinking pocketbooks.
The site provides the best possible prices to film lovers on any given Bluray DVD. New releases are featured prominently on the home page along with a weekly featured Bluray disc. No engineering degree is required to use this site. A fast search feature allows visitors to search for specific titles. A tab for cheap disks brings up current bargains with a click of a mouse.
Film fans with a favorite genre will find their fix browsing by genre and for those who simply are undecided all discs may be browsed at once in alphabetical order. Other tabs from the menu bring new releases and coming soon features. There is also a very helpful tutorial section about Bluray DVDs’ which will provide helpful information for new HD disc users, including invaluable regional encoding information for international customers.
Rather than going from shop to shop and comparing prices, film lovers can find the best price on a given Blu-ray disc at Blu-ray sale. Conserving time and money the site is expected to be very popular with film buyers.
Bluray disc prices are going to continue to be more affordable to movie buyers by all indications. Those who wish to take full advantage of the popularity and falling prices of HD would do well to log on to www.Blu-Raysale.eu.

When the first Xbox 360’s were released, their main focus there was HD integration. “They had No discussions regarding Blu-Ray integration.” But once the PlayStation 3 was released later, they assumed that it wouldn’t get a lot of sales. Not until the stats came out. In the first six weeks, The PlayStation 3 sold 1 million units, worldwide. That’s the fastest sold video gaming.
The Xbox 360 however sold 600,000 units in their first six weeks. That’s a 40% difference in sales! Think of how Microsoft’s first reaction to this was! They would’ve been angry at the big difference. So, the Microsoft Xbox company went back to the drawing board. This was how the Xbox 360 Elite and Xbox 360 Arcade were formed.
But, they still saw that the PS3 was slightly edging their sales. So, they’re Rumored to be adding the Blu-ray, since the PS3 has gotten better reviews that the 360. If they do add Blu-Ray, Xbox 360’s will become slightly cheaper, since Blu-Ray is cheaper than HD. But HD could be better than Blu-Ray, reports say.
True or False:
This is still an unsure rumor, just because of how detailed this rumor is and how new the rumor is. I’ve heard it’s false because some people say that it won’t be the major feature for the 360, since the PS3 already has Blu-Ray. But they did claim that all ideas would be heard and taken into consideration.

Advanced data storage format’s thrust led to the development of the Blu-Ray disk format. This disk format is the enhanced, advanced and extension of the optical disk format DVD, CD and HD-DVD. The advanced and innovative attributes of the Blu-Ray technology has altered the optical media storage’s definition. Nowadays in this modern era, the sky is not considered as the limit. As there is always room and space for improvement and enhancement. Same is the case which led to the introduction of the Blu-Ray disk technology.
Actually the need arose for the optical disk’s next generation before the DVD disk format’s commercialization. Work began on the Blu-Ray format before the release of the DVD format keeping in view the DVD technology’s limitations. BD disk format has advanced security and storage features with high quality audio and video that gives this format edge and advantage over the other formats.
TDK is one of the leading companies in the digital recording. TDK has developed the Blu-Ray technology of 200GB which is the most advanced developed optical media. This is an important achievement that has shaped the optical media’s future. Blu-ray has proved to be the leading ultimate disk format. The Blu-Ray DVD disks have become main increasing products in the product line of TDK. The 200GB TDK blu0ray disk can store HD-video of about 18 hours encoded at the speed of 24MB/sec. These Blu-Ray discs with massive storage capacity are best for the backup of high definition archives and editing sessions.
It was April, 2006 when TDK first shipped the Blu-ray 25GB BD-RE & BD-R disks. CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) awarded TDK in 2007 the award of Design & Engineering for its Blu-Ray 25GB disk media. TDK then shipped its Blu-Ray disks (50GB) in 2007’s first quarter. In the next quarter of that year, the thermal & inkjet printable Blu-Ray was shipped by TDK. TDK Mini Blu-ray recordable and rewritable disks use recording structure (single layer) with capacity to hold 16.5 GB data. The Mini BD-RE & BD-R ensure exceptional capture quality and recording length. These disks are also compatible with the drives of Blu-Ray.
TDK exhibited the CD & DVD media at CES in cases of “Snap N Save”. This offering by TDK is the combination of solid media storage and tough disk protection. The “Snap N Save” seals out dust, dirt and similar other pollutants that can negatively effect the performance if media. Therefore it protects and secures the disks. “Snap N Save” is substitute to the disk spindles. It helps storage of multiple disks and the case clutter is also cut down. It can be stowed on about any kind of shelf.

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of the most technologically advanced optical disc storage medium on the market. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which is a group of the worlds leading consumer electronics, computer hardware and motion picture companies. The BD disc has the same physical dimensions as a standard DVD and CD, but its main advantages are more storage space for data and the ability to store high-definition video. This allows Blu-ray players to play the highest quality movies at 1080p resolution with an HDMI cable. Blu-ray Disks are able to hold up to ten times more storage capacity than a traditional DVD, that is 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. Recent developments by Pioneer players have pushed the storage capacity to 500GB on a single disc by using 20 layers but they are still developiing and perfecting the technology.
If you like burning with your existing DVD burner on your computer, you will love a Blu-ray burner. The Blu-ray format is able to store much more data due to its blue-violet laser which has a shorter wave length than the DVD standard of a red laser. This offers the Blu-ray media to focus the laser with even greater precision offering the data to be packed more tightly and use less space on the disc. That is where is can hold ten times as much data, a DVD single layer will hold 4.7GB where as a dual-layer Blu-ray disc will hold 50GB. Many Bly-ray players are backwards compatible with DVD and CD discs so you can watch your current collection.
On Going Development
The companies in the Blu-ray Disc Association are working on improving Blu-ray discs and making them cheaper. There are over 1200 Blu-ray movies currently on Blu-ray discs and they are always releasing more every week. Currently, the companies are working on making quad-layer 100GB discs, 200GB discs and even a 20 layer 500GB disc. There are also Mini Blu-ray Discs which have been developed for compact camcorders and other compact recording devices. But the most exciting development has to be the recordable Blu-ray disc. As with DVD, they will have a single use disc or BD-R and a disc that can be erased and re-recorded multiple times, the BD-RE. The first recordable discs were released in February 2008 and in March 2008, BD-R gained official support from the Sony Playstation 3. If you are in the market to upgrade or start your home entertainment system, a Blu-ray player and/or a Blu-ray recorder are must have items for any entertainment enthusiast.

Blu-ray Disc Versus Other Optical Discs
A Blu-ray disc, looks much like any other optical disc, including first-generation CDs, second-generation DVDs, and the competing third-generation HD DVDs.
A Blu-ray disc system uses a blue-violet laser with a wavelength of 405 nanometers to write and read data on the optical disc. This laser is the source of Blu-ray’s name and the technology which differentiates Blu-ray from previous generation optical media. The 405 nanometer blue-violet laser is also used for writing and reading data on third-generation HD DVD discs, which have smaller data storage capacity per layer. Older optical media require a red laser for data storage and retrieval.
Blu-ray Storage Capacity
The Blu-ray disc system uses a shorter wavelength than conventional optical discs (CD systems use a red laser with a wavelength of 780 nanometers whereas DVD systems use the same red laser with a wavelength of 650 nanometers). The shorter wavelength means more precise data recording, which allows more data to be packed on the Blu-ray disc surface than a comparable CD or DVD surface. In fact, a standard single-layer Blu-ray disc can store as much as 25 GB of digital data, more than five times the storage capacity of conventional DVDs. A dual-layer Blu-ray disc can store a maximum of 50 GB of digital data. On the drawing board are quadruple-layer Blu-ray discs with 100 GB digital data storage capacities.
Blu-ray Support
To enjoy the considerable benefits of a Blu-ray disc, one must have a Blu-ray disc player (either standalone or software-based) that supports reading of the Blu-ray disc. Blu-ray video players need to have an MPEG-2 codec (which makes a player capable of playing DVDs and HD DVDs), a VC-1 codec, and an AVC or MPEG-4 codec. Movies stored in Blu-ray discs will use any one of the above-mentioned codecs. One movie can also have more than one codec, as long as each codec used is supported by Blu-ray technology.

About the Author:
The currently commercially available Blu-Ray discs have the storage capacity of 25 GB. Those having two layers can store 50 GB of data. The problem in developing multiple layers disc have been to obtain a clear and stable signal from each recording layer. The frequently visited problems were crosstalk from adjacent layers and transmission loss. Pioneer managed to overcome these issues and developed a disc structure that reduces crosstalk from adjacent layers. Finally it came with a 16-layer optical disc that can play back high-quality signals from each layer.
The good news is that these high capacity discs are backward-compatible and will play on Blu-Ray disc players. These discs can be read using the same objective lens in current Blu-ray drives. Video game publishers and movie studios can use these discs to take more content on a single disc.
With the development of this technology, Pioneer is putting a green spin on the development. Discs with such enormous capacities mean fewer resources are consumed to deliver the same data or movies on Blu-ray media. For consumers, the main advantage of this technology is the chances of renting an entire season of a television show or collection of movies on a single disc. No need of disc-swapping.
So what do you think? Isn’t it the future of data storage?
